“People will sometimes try to cut you down to size to make themselves look bigger, so if you start out small, they will only make you smaller.” I read these words on the internet - advise from a mother to her married daughter - and I realized just how important they were for me - in my new job, in my new role as a wife, with a new extended family - and I made it my motto for the new year (atleast for some day/months, till I find something more inspiring to give me a new lead into my life-path).
As women, we often take things lying low. Our mother’s teach us, “Girl’s are meant to be seen and not heard.” We grow on principles of humility and softness, of discipline and quietude, and we usually take a whip-lashing from fate and people, without batting an eyelid. We are docile … we are seen, but we are not heard. But till the time, we are not heard, we will not be taken seriously. For our own sanity and for the sanctity of the power of womanhood, we have to voice our concerns and put across our opinions.
I will not start out small this new year. I will talk to my boss and colleagues about my talents and my capabilities, my accomplishments and my contributions; I will talk to my spouse about my need to be independent and comfortable, the need to pursue my hobbies and my dreams; and I will tell the world that they need not trample me while on their ego-trip, because I stand firm, and strong and larger than life than anyone, because I am a woman with a mind of my own.
Let this be a new year resolution for all women who want to stand up for themselves and those who are already in the league of the liberated, to stand out and way above the crowd. Remember, “People will sometimes try to cut you down to size to make themselves look bigger, so if you start out small, they will only make you smaller.”
