Different Strokes

Agendra’s Musings

Over the last several weeks, I have observed, and I am sure many will agree that news papers like the Times of India make a depressing start to an otherwise better day. First five pages usually carry a dozen stories on rape, suicide, murder and other crimes. In fact instead of starting my day with Times of India, I have switched over to The Economic Times.

I find the news about rising inflation, slowing economy, soaring prices of precious metals etc. less frightening. I know that every thing goes though a cycle, and lows are usually followed by highs and vice versa. To me these are less depressing than the stories about father killing a daughter, son killing a parent for money … and so many un-imaginable reasons, for which people can kill. Committing a murder has become so common that one actually feels the number of road accidents have reduced. Have they? I guess not, but the papers have more spicier stories to carry, so petty accidents, even if they were fatal don’t get the column space.

Well the intention of this note was not to crib. I wanted to remind every one who reads this blog that let us not forget small gestures to each other, especially to your close family members, to convey our love and affection. ‘I love you’ – is still a very powerful phrase. Don’t hesitate to say ‘I love you son’, or ‘I love you daughter’, or ‘I love you mom for showing me the way to become what I am today’ or “I love you dad for standing by me in good and bad’ or ‘I love you friend to hearing me out’.

In these times birthdays and anniversaries are ususally wished by a stupid SMS, and its hard for people to find time to make a phone call or post a card. Special gestures like sending a card, or making a call do provide the much required boost to the relationships. Don’t take forgranted that the other person knows you love him or her – convey your feelings and preferably say it with flowers. A hug is even better. Time flies, don’t lose out, say or do these before it is too late.

Secondly, I wanted to remind every one to share your joys and sorrows with people close to you. If some thing is bothering you, some one is troubling you; you are not happy with your job or studies or finances, ask for help, share with your close ones and believe me they will be there with you.

A dear friend died under mysterious circumstances last month. Today I regret the ice cream I didn’t have with her and my wife asks me if there is way she can hug her and say Shanti - you silently suffered all the wrong that people did to you. Why didn’t you tell us when there was still time…!
